YIKES! Another Black Eye for Quaker Oats – What Oat Lovers Need to Know

On the heels of the Quaker Oats salmonella outbreak that caused a recall of more than 60 products last month, yesterday it was revealed that Chlormequat, a  pesticide linked to reproductive and developmental issues in animals was found in oat-based foods sold in the U.S., including under major brand names like Cheerios and Quaker Oats, according to a recent peer-reviewed study. Chlormequat was detected in 80% of people tested in three geographical regions of the U.S. between 2017 and 2023, according to the study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology.

Certainly Quaker (parent company PepsiCo) has had it’s share of oat issues in the past.  Some readers may remember when some”Gluten-Free” Cherrios samples tested at 90 ppm.

When I heard the news, I immediately contacted our growers (we only have two) Here is the first response I got:

“There are many chemicals like this in conventionally grown food, that is the reason for eating organic food, no chemicals. We are very strict with our conventional growers, we don’t allow the use of many chemicals like chormequat, glyphosate and paraquat.”
